Alaskan Area, December 17, 1942. Statement of Robert von Scheele, Master and chartered owner of motor boat Phyllis-S. The diesel motor boat Phyllis-S was proceeding at about eight miles per hour, headed from Chadrik Bay for Polar Bear Rock on the afternoon of December 17. 1942, when she was hit on the port quarter by the U.S. destroyer No. AVD-6. The Phyllis-S was cut in half, all cargo and mail (about 25 bags) lost. The crew and passengers were rescued by the destroyer except one passenger, Mrs. Alf Paakhanen and grandchild, who were lost. I had just left the topside and gone below to get something to eat. Deckhand Tom von Scheele had the helm and George Scroggs, passenger, was in the wheelhouse with him at the time. The engineer, Monroe Rongvid, was working topside aft on the port side, and was knocked overboard by the impact. All other passengers and crew were below at the time. No one on board saw the destroyer approaching. A complete list of passengers and crew is given below. The time of the above occurrence was at 2.33 p.m., which is the destroyer's time and approximate- ly correct to the best of my knowledge, Robert Von Scheele (Master) - Kodiak. Alaska.
