Kodiak Bear BULLETIN: NO PLANS TO ABANDON THE STATION U.S. NAVAL STATION, KODIAK, Alaska (April 10) --Capt. Roy P. Gee, commanding officer of this installation, announced last night that a list of rehabilitation and repair projects has been submitted to higher authority and that work on earthquake and sea wave-damaged structures and facilities will commence in the very near fu ture. Meanwhile rumors are widespread that the Station is to phase-out or will be abandoned "There is absolutely no truth to these ru- mors," Capt. Gee emphatically pointed out. "The Naval Station and associated commands are of such importance to our over-all defense posture that there are no plans to abandon them," Capt. Gee added. With essential services now restored, the Naval Station is again full "steam" ahead. The unflagging efforts by Station personnel, elements of Mobile Construction Battalion 9 and the seap1ane tender Salisbury Sound, put NO PLANS TO ABANDON THE STATION the Station back on its feet in record time. To assure continuous warmth in homes and barracks and office spaces, seven auxiliary boilers were installed, and portable genera tors have been rigged for emergency use should the main power plant become disabled once more. Value of damaged Station real property has been placed at $9 million plus, with more dam ages still undetermined. The rehabilitation program will cover the marginal pier, roads and bridges and the re- location of the road from holiday Beach to Chiniak. Cracked portions of runways and taxiways, hangars and the flooded-out central power plant also require rehabitation. Replacement project will cover construction of a new bowling alley, carpentry and ceramics shop and other special services facilities. A new Public Works shop is also planned. The Captain's Office will keep everyone in formed of construction and rehabilitation developments from time to time. -by Ely U. Orias, JOl -USN
