Kodiak 28 November 1945 The telephone system serving Ft. Greely at this time consisted of a few thousand feet of aerial cable and a one-position W.E. #12 switchboard equipped with 100 sub- scriber lines. This board was so busy during rush hours that 15 cord circuits could not handle the traffic. All the plant up to this time had been engineered and installed by the Navy contractor. At the insistence of the Post signal officer the contractor had ordered three additional switchboard positions and sufficient multiple to give a capacity of 300 lines. When the new positions were to be installed it was felt that the central office should be more securely located. ~ ne-tv frame building was construct- ed by the Post utilities personnel in a location where the terrain formed natural revetzaent on three sides. The new switchboard positions and the necessary cable plant to reach the new office were installed by ACS and 14th Signal Service technicians. With the arrival of the ACS engineering officer in May 1942 all engineering of signal installations for the Army was discontinued by the Navy contractor and taken over by ACS. The functions of supply were taken over by ACS at the same time, and with the exception of materials already on order, nothing further was supplied by the contractor. Expansion of the Post telephone aerial cable system was engineered during the summer of 1942 and construction was carried out by the contractor and 14th Signal personnel. -3-
