Greely, Alaska 18 April, 1944 Subject: Fire Control Project SCD-162. To: Commanding Officer, Hq., Alaska Communication system, 550 Federal Office Building, Seattle 4, Washington. 1. The installation of equipment, switchboards, phones and Time Interval apparatus is nearly completed. However, due to changes in Garrison strength a situation has arisen which needs clarification and recommendations from your office. The present plans for this post will result in certain areas not being manned. Spruce Island, Kizhuyak Point, Buskin Beach Battery three, Greville Point, Soquel Point, Narrow Cape, and eventually Chiniak are to be completely shut down. Already equipment installed only a few weeks ago at Soquel, Greville, and Narrow Cape has been pulled out and stored by the Coast Artillery. This equipment has already been shipped to the Post and the inspection of the entire installation has been made by the Post; hence the acceptance report as signed by the Post Commander will not reflect these changes. If we install at Kizhuyak, Spruce Island, Buskin Beach and possibly Miller Point the same will result--the equipment will not be maintained and will be removed and stored. New and larger equipment now under order from your station will no longer be needed, larger batteries, additional PBX boards repeater units; all of these are now unnecessary for handling the greatly depleted load. Repeater units were shipped under ESR 1816 D, this ESR was cancelled by Change order "B" dated 8 November 1943. however, the equipment has been shipped and is now stored in our warehouse. The policy under which these outposts are being closed down is that they may be alerted at some future date, but they are allowed fifteen days for each area, with a single trained Coast Artillery crew installing, to be back in operation. With the above considerations in mind the following recommendations are forwarded to your office for your consideration and advice: a. Propose to complete all outside which is in the processing stage, that is all cable in the ground will be spliced but no additional cable S E C R E T _ _ _ _ _ _
